Project: Do Apps Over Thanksgiving Break is turning out to be a total bust (I already have ideas for a second Dreadcharacter, this is bad). Also, regarding my schedule: I am starting a daily dose of Ambien at 11:00 p.m. CST, so I will be out of commission from that point every night for the foreseeable future. However, I shall endeavor to be around more during the day, and I am always reachable by e-mail!

HELLO FELLOWS. So, Sheena, Maddie, Shawna and I have been thinking: what fleets needs more of is blatant rip-offs of military television shows. Our television show of choice? NCIS, motherlovers. Right now we have versions of Tony, Gibbs, Ziva, and Abby on the docket; I know a few people are apping forensic people of some kind, so we will probably hit you up for a Ducky. Or you should hit us up. Or something. There will be hitting. We still need a McGee, and maybe a Palmer and/or director of some kind idkkkk. ANYWAY, lovedbythesun, a_chroi, and ikhan, you should put up stuff about your characters here. And plot things.

HERE IS THE BASIC RUNDOWN OF MINE: He is still in the works, but I know that he is currently not military--he's some kind of intelligence officer, though I have to figure out which branch of the government. He'll probably be with the NSA/CSS, and be a specialist in languages, codes, cryptology, and FILING. But that all might change; he is sort of on the backburner at present. What I do know about him is that he's a stickler for protocol and a firm believer in the power of paperwork and accuracy--bitches, you will be signing all forms in triplicate forever. He was born outside the US and English isn't his first language, so while he's aces at breaking codes, he occasionally fucks up basic colloquialisms and words, and please do not ask him about current internet slang. "What is 'lulz'?" This will be an IC question.

edit. Unrelated, but I've decided Joss/Ryan Gosling PB's callsign is going to be Brawny. As in paper towels. Because he is known for wearing red flannel and cleaning shit.

stethoscopic has made me excited (!!!) about RPing in an Anticipating of Plans type of way, which is new given that all my Neo plots are making me excited in a Tinged With Melancholia type of way -- it's rather exhilarating to fall into a new world tits over heels and exercising new muscles in the application process. After a break to respond to scenes and the like (HI chthonian AND faeriexlights, HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU), stupa shall be wrested into submission with wicked amounts of enthusiasm. Hello, Classical Archaeology, and thank you for finally being somewhat useful.

In other news, I made a delicious pumpkin cheesecake that is actually a fat lot better for you (HAR HAR) than usual recipes. It is basically like the baking gods said hi, Allison, you can make decent things for the holiday season. OM NOM NOM.

So I caught wind of this post/essay/meta on Lily tonight.

What struck me most was not the content itself (though it makes me happy, because I love Lily and it's annoying to see people tear her apart rather than embrace both her humanity and flaws alongside her strengths), but that fact that 1) it's necessary for fans to defend against such a wide range of misogynistic bashing of female characters (I can remember Anti-Narcissa essays back in the day that made me SEETHE) and 2) I can only recall a handful of essays that cover a somewhat sane positions on canon/interpretation, but I can think of comms full of the Lily-bashing/female-character/any-character bashing. I'm sure the reality is not so uneven, but in my mind it very much is.

Ultimately, it always comes back to this - why do some fans, fanfic writers, roleplayers, etc feel the need to tear down everyone around a character just to make their own more sympathetic? We may not always agree with the creator, but we were still provided with toys to play with that have depths we can explore simply by logically assessing the canon. Is is that people are insecure about their ability to rewrite characters as they are in canon, is it just laziness, or is it speaking to a need to make their character one hundred percent right?

For me, something that has always put me off a fic or a character bio is the moment they make someone the convenient villain to get what they want, without any thought for how it demeans their own character to do so. Be it tortured!Sirius or ignored!Andromeda or beaten-by-Ron!Hermione or delicate-flower!Draco or whatever, in the end it always feels like it's taken away from or trivialized that character (Sirius escaped to save his life, rather than it be because he was not being treated as a person with opinions and feelings of his own, Andromeda ran away because her family didn't love her and Ted was the only one who did, instead of it being she changed her purist mind for one man and retained other prejudices, etc) rather than make them sympathetic and layered.

Ugh, and I should so be sleeping, family things to do in a few hours!

Hello please, have some more character spam. These aren't held yet since I'm already at my limit of 4 holds (I WILL NEVER STOP), but just so I can get the ideas ~out~. Also so I can feebly hope no one uses them/the PBs. Allow me this hope.

Three hours ago an old character grabbed hold of my brain and I made the hold (yes, goodbye for the moment Hugo, maybe if I can be awesomely active with my four I'll still app him in a few weeks).

Eight minutes ago I submitted the completed app. No, Louis is still not done. HE WILL BE THOUGH. I just want to be sure he isn't going to infringe on Cassie's niche in the game too badly because I think they are more than a bit alike and wah I am an anxious and fretful person.

So, anyhow, I've potentially unleashed Owen Gibbon upon the world again. This is the character I'm actually embarrassed to be "seen with" and yet I'm playing him again. Craaaazy. It's not that he's going to be mean or violent or visibly purist or anything, he'll be a perfect gentleman and nice to everyone and protective of children and constantly sending little trinkets to the ladies that catch his attention, whether they're single or married. It's that he's such an ICKY PIECE OF WORK underneath it all AND I DON'T LIKE HIM AT ALL. I want to slap a warning sticker on him so characters don't get taken in by him, because otherwise it's likely a lot will because he just SUCKS PEOPLE IN. AND I JUST FLAIL.
